Denise Corliss and her dog, Bretagne (pronounced “Brittany”) were sent to Ground Zero in 2001. They were members of Texas Task Force 1. Bretagne and Denise worked for 10 days at the World Trade Center – Bretagne was only about one year old. Bretagne served at other disaster sites including Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.

At the age of 9, Bretagne retired – from search and rescue but offered her services as a reading assistance dog, was nominated for a Hero Dog Award, and starred in a non-fiction book about senior dogs. Just this week, at the age of 16, Bretagne was put to sleep. She had been suffering from kidney failure and had stopped eating. She was the last living 9/11 search and rescue dog.

Firefighters from the CY Fair FD gave her a hero’s salute on her way into the veterinarian’s’ office. RIP Bretagne and thank you for everything you’ve done for us. SHARE away, people.
