A four-year-old child found space to crawl through a railing and then fell into the moat of the gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo. The gorilla, Harambe, picked up the child and dragged him around the habitat. Zoo officials felt the Harambe’s behavior would likely result in the death of the child, so Harambe was shot and killed.

The 4-year-old was taken to Cincinnati Children’s’ Hospital but didn’t suffer any life-threatening injuries. Zoo director, Thayne Maynard, said that using a tranquilizer may not have taken effect quickly and could have agitated Harambe, which could have resulted in more severe injuries to the child. Harambe had just celebrated his 17th birthday. Followers of the zoo on Facebook had extended their birthday wishes.

Parents, please hold on to your kids at the zoo. Do NOT let them climb the fences surrounding the habitats of the animals. Harambe’s death was easily preventable. Share away, people.
